Welcome Remarks: James E. Ryan

James E. Ryan, Dean of the Faculty of Education/Professor of Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education

James E. Ryan is the 11th dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. A leading expert on law and education, Ryan has written extensively about the ways in which law structures educational opportunity. His articles and essays address such topics as school desegregation, school finance, school choice, standards and testing, pre-K, and the intersection of special education and neuroscience. Ryan is also the co-author of the textbook Educational Policy and the Law, and the author of Five Miles Away, A World Apart, which was published in 2010 by Oxford University Press. In addition, Ryan has authored articles on constitutional law and theory and has argued before the United States Supreme Court.

Before coming to Harvard, Ryan was the Matheson & Morgenthau Distinguished Professor at the University of Virginia School of Law. He served as academic associate dean from 2005–09 and founded and directed the school’s Program in Law and Public Service. While at Virginia, Ryan also received an All-University Teaching Award, an Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, and several awards for his scholarship. Ryan has been a visiting professor at Harvard, Yale, and the University of Auckland. He has also served on numerous education boards and commissions, including the U.S. Department of Education’s Equity and Excellence Commission and the board of the Maya Angelou Public Charter School in Washington, D.C.

Ryan received his A.B., summa cum laude, from Yale University and his J.D. from the University of Virginia, which he attended on a full scholarship and from which he graduated first in his class. After law school, Ryan clerked for Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, and then worked in Newark, N.J. as a public interest lawyer before entering into teaching. Ryan and his wife, Katie, live near Cambridge with their four school-age children.

Heather Staker, Senior Research Fellow, Education, Clayton Christensen Institute
Heather is one of the world’s foremost experts on K-12 blended learning. She is well known for her work defining blended learning and naming the four most common models of blended learning in practice across America. In her seminal 2011 paper entitled “The rise of K-12 blended learning,” Heather profiled 40 of the most prominent programs that helped shape the early days of blended learning. In 2012 she co-authored “Classifying K-12 blended learning,” which identifies the main models of blended learning and explains how they differ. Her 2013 paper, “Is K-12 blended learning disruptive?” which she co-authored with Clayton Christensen and Michael Horn, makes provocative predictions about the future of America’s classrooms. Her other research topics include competency-based learning, digital learning policy, and expanding high-speed broadband access.

Prior to joining the Christensen Institute, Heather served under Governor Pete Wilson’s administration as a member of the California State Board of Education. She was a teaching fellow at Harvard College and a strategy consultant for McKinsey & Company. Heather also founded a nonprofit preschool in Los Angeles and Boston and served as a teacher for three and four year olds. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College and received an MBA, with distinction, from Harvard Business School. She is the mother of five pre-K and elementary school students.

Chris has served as a member of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Foundations of Educational and Psychological Assessment and a member of the 2010 National Educational Technology Plan Technical Working Group. Bio:

Dr. Fullerton is the executive director of the Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard University. He has extensive experience working with policy makers and executives in designing and implementing organizational change and improvements. Before coming to Harvard, Dr. Fullerton served as the Board of Education’s Director of Budget and Financial Policy for the Los Angeles Unified School District. In this capacity, he provided independent evaluations of District reforms and helped to ensure that the District’s budget was aligned with Board priorities. From 2002 to 2005, he was Vice President of Strategy, Evaluation, Research, and Policy at the Urban Education Partnership in Los Angeles, where he worked with policy makers to ensure that they focused on high impact educational strategies. Prior to this, he worked for five years at McKinsey & Company as a strategy consultant. Dr. Fullerton has a PhD in government and AB in social studies, both from Harvard.

Irene Greif has spent her career building interdisciplinary teams focused on collaboration, social software and organizational design. She recently retired from IBM where she was an IBM Fellow and Chief Scientist for Social Learning. She founded the field of Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) in 1986, and has applied the principles of that field as Director of the IBM Center for Social Business and head of the Collaborative User Experience Group (CUE) in Cambridge, MA. Irene is a former faculty member of Computer Science at University of Washington and of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT. She headed a research group in the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science that developed shared calendar, co-authoring, and real-time collaboration systems. She is a fellow of both the Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and Association of Computing Machinery (ACM). Irene joined Lotus Development Corporation in 1987, formed Lotus Research in 1992, and merged that group into the IBM Research Division in 2000. Irene received her S.B. in Mathematics, her S.M. and her PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, all from MIT.

Andrew has served as an executive at many technology companies where he successfully managed business and corporate development for enterprise and consumer software companies. His past roles have included VP of Business Development for Corel Software, CEO at Outerlink, VP of Sales and Marketing at Open Orders (acquired by IBM), and VP of Business Development at CommercialWare (acquired by Micros). When he is not spreading the word about TenMarks, Andrew helps introduce people to the joy of skiing as a part-time ski instructor.

Bio:

Ann is the VP of Learning Innovation at CS4Ed (Consulting Services for Education). She has served in district public school leadership positions, including Deputy Superintendent for Teaching & Learning in Newton and Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent in Watertown. She began her educational leadership career as Director of Technology Initiatives at the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents. She has directed or worked with a variety of state and national educational technology initiatives, such as the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Consortium, WIDE World at Harvard Graduate School, and Massachusetts Leadership Initiatives in Teaching and Technology. She has also devoted her time to the Massachusetts Association of Supervision & Curriculum Development Board and the Massachusetts Business and Education for Schools and Technology executive committee. Currently she serves as a board member of the Harvard Alumni Association and a mentor for LearnLaunchX. Koufman-Frederick received her PhD in Educational Leadership from Boston College Lynch Graduate School of Education, her CAGS in Instructional Technology from Lesley University, and her BA in Psychology and Social Relations from Harvard University.

Patrick is in his second year as the Assistant Superintendent for Learning for Burlington Public Schools in Massachusetts. Prior to this, Patrick served 15 years as a building level administrator at the high school level. In 2012, he was selected as one of three national Digital Principal Award winners by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). As a high school Principal, Patrick led Burlington High School (BHS) in the transition to a 1:1 environment as BHS became one of the first schools in the nation to distribute iPads to all staff and students. He regularly presents to colleagues on the power of social media for administrators, teachers, and students. He is also a Senior Consultant for EdTech Teacher.

Previously a director at Berkery Noyes, Adam originated the firm’s strategic advisory practice for education companies and investors and was a core member supporting the Education and Training practice’s transactional activities. Adam also served as Managing Vice President at Eduventures, Inc., the education industry’s premier strategic market research and consulting firm supporting pre-K-12, postsecondary, and corporate training businesses, investors, and colleges and universities. Prior to his work with Eduventures, Adam served as a senior manager at the Corporate Executive Board (Nasdaq: EXBD) in the company’s Corporate Strategy Board practice. Adam began his professional career as a K-12 educator and athletic coach at schools in Boston, MA and New Orleans, LA. He earned an A.B. in English from Duke University.

Greg’s teaching methods and thoughts on educational technology have been featured nationally in publications, such as The Huffington Post, EdSurge and American Teacher: Heroes in the Classroom by Katrina Fried. Schwanbeck is an Apple Distinguished Educator, a recurring guest lecturer for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s new teacher program, and a regional leader in providing edtech-focused professional development. Greg earned his master’s degree in Technology, Innovation, and Education at Harvard University and earned his bachelor’s degrees in Physics and Mathematics at Union College.
