Privacy, Bidding and Contracting with Schools

Session Three: Privacy, Bidding and Contracting with Schools
Date: September 13, 2017
Facilitator(s): Matthew Johnson, Attorney, Cooley LLP
In the last five years, there was a lot of legislative movement in relation to protecting student data privacy. Nearly 400 privacy bills have been considered, and 70 have become law. These laws have created a more complex environment for edtech companies and the school’s with which they contract.
In this session, participants will:
  • Discuss the importance of a Privacy Policy (and how to craft and read one)
  • Consider the privacy practices that startups should adopt at any early stage to be successful in district contracting
  • Evaluate how FERPA and COPPA should be addressed in both schools and by edtech entrepreneurs
  • Identify how to effectively work through the school procurement process
